Kalbar Operations comment on the retirement of the Yallourn Power Station

   Tuesday 16th March, 2021

Kalbar Operations acknowledges the news from earlier this week that Energy Australia will retire the Yallourn Power Station in mid-2028.

The Yallourn Power Station has played a significant role in supporting the local economy and local employment across the Latrobe Valley and wider Gippsland region for many years and we are saddened for the people who will be impacted by this closure.

Census data indicates that more than 250 people from the East Gippsland and Wellington Shire Council regions are employed in the mining industry, a large portion presumably in the Latrobe Valley.

While still in the approval process, the Fingerboards Mineral Sands Project has the potential to create more than 200 jobs for local people in the near future.

Kalbar welcomes expressions of interest from people impacted by the future closure of Yallourn Power Station who reside in the communities of East Gippsland and Wellington for future employment on the Fingerboards Mineral Sands Project.

Kalbar will engage with local stakeholders, including the Latrobe Valley Authority, to support the transition of workers from Yallourn to other industries, including mining.

Expressions of interest should be forwarded to

Jozsef Patarica – CEO, Kalbar Operations Pty Ltd
