It’s been a whole year since we proudly introduced our Kalbar Conversations to readers of the Bairnsdale Advertiser. Our intent was, and remains, to share information about all manner of things to do with mineral sands and all the work that has been going on behind the scenes to develop the Fingerboards mineral sands project.
When we kicked off on 28 February 2020 the community was still reeling from the impacts of the summer bushfires and Bairnsdale had become an active hub for directing recovery support and services to assist the hard-hit East Gippsland region.
In the midst of bushfire recovery efforts we were then struck by the COVID-19 pandemic which has impacted each and every one of us in different ways. As a community we have remained resilient, we have adapted, and life, although changed, has continued.
As the Kalbar Operations team has also adapted to necessary life and business changes due to the pandemic, one thing that has remained constant throughout this past 12 months is our Kalbar Conversations column. We have tried to keep it interesting, engaging, educational, and informative, and the only change has been the fortnightly topic.
We have enjoyed covering a broad range of information throughout the year – from explaining why mineral sands matter in our day-to-day lives, through to talking about the geological formation of mineral sands, and how we have gathered, and continue to gather, vast amounts of scientific data to inform the design of the proposed mining operation.
We have introduced the new members of our executive team, and kept readers up-to-date about, and explained, the Environment Effects Statement (EES) process as we worked through the State government approval process last year. We have talked about our recent drilling campaign, written about the importance of water, and our resident ecological guru, Dr Paul Gibson-Roy, has enthused us about seed production and native grassy woodland restoration.
More recently, we’ve enjoyed writing the series about the heavy minerals that make up the Fingerboards deposit. We also published a story about mineral sands rehabilitation to honour our colleague and mineral sands expert, the late Dr Victor Hugo.
Please stay tuned - there is an endless list of topics that we will continue to share over the next 12 months.
If you are curious about a particular subject and want us to write about it, please let us know – email email@example.com or call 1800 791 396.
We will happily oblige.
